About

I am a reporter who for over ten years specialized in Latin America. During that time, I worked in about a dozen countries, and wrote about politics, arts and culture, and business. More recently, I became interested in finance and economics, particularly as these intersect with policy issues, and returned to graduate school. I was a Jorge Paulo Lemann Fellow at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) and the Fundação Getulio Vargas School of Management in São Paulo. In May 2012, I finished my studies toward a Master of Public Administration, with a concentration in economic policy and international finance.

This website is meant as an archive of my writing and reporting, and as a kind of open notebook, so that I can share and build upon ideas, and the material I’m writing about. I take all responsibility for what is on these pages, including the mistakes I am sure to make. I encourage readers to write with corrections or objections. Please write to ballve -at- GMAIL.

If I link, it means I have fully read (watched, listened to, etc.) what is on the other end but am not responsible for the content’s accuracy.

    Mr. Ballve,
I’m a journalism student graduating from the University of Wisconsin in May, and I’m interested in reporting in Latin America (specifically Dominican Republic). I’m considering applying for the IAPA grant that it looks like you received in 2006. Is there any chance you could find 15 minutes to speak with me over the phone about your experience working using the IAPA grant and give me advice about applying? Thanks very much in advance for helping me out with this.
    Best,
    Jacob Kushner
